The process of building a social media audience is longer than most people expect it to be, and the longer it is, the more it varies from platform to platform. We’ve compiled a complete guide on data-based timeline guides for Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, and LinkedIn.

The One Thing Every Platform Has in Common

Before delving into the timeline of each of these platforms, there's a piece of data that puts context to the rest. A study of over 100,000 users over a span of 26 weeks found that those creators who posted content on a regular basis over a period of 20 or more weeks experienced 450% more engagement per piece of content than those creators who didn't.

Even those creators who fell into the middle tier of consistency experienced 340% more engagement than those creators who didn't. The single largest factor in your growth isn't which platforms you're on, but how long you're able to be consistent on those platforms.

Instagram: 3 to 12 Months to Build Real Momentum

The growth process for Instagram is mostly front-loaded with frustration. Most Instagram creators experience little growth in the first 60-90 days, regardless of the quality of their content. This is because the Instagram algorithm takes time to understand the account and start recommending it.

A good growth rate for Instagram followers should be between 2.5% and 5% per month. If the growth rate falls within this range, you're growing well, based on Hootsuite's 2025 predictions. A study done by Buffer on over two million posts on Instagram also revealed that posting 3-5 times a week could help you more than double the growth rate compared to once or twice a week, confirming the fact that you don’t need to post daily. However, realistically, most accounts posting this often reach their first big milestone in 6-12 months.

TikTok: 90 Days to Know If Your Content Works

TikTok also has the quickest feedback loop of any major platform, meaning that its algorithm will show content to non-followers right off the bat, so you can get tens of thousands of views on your first video, or zero views at all. Most growth practitioners will recommend that you wait 90 days before making any conclusions about whether or not your content is working.

For regular creators posting 2-5 times per week, gaining 10,000 followers will take 6-12 months. For dedicated influencer-level accounts posting daily, you can hit that same 10,000 followers in 2-3 months. Gaining 1 million followers will take most creators 1-2 years of consistent, strategic output.

YouTube: 6 to 18 Months Before Real Traction

YouTube’s timeline is the longest of all the big video-sharing platforms. One report mentioned that it takes 6 to 18 months to gain significant traction on the site. Meanwhile, building a sustainable channel on the site takes a 2 to 3-year effort. The initial 3 to 6 months are always a testing period, where the views are minimal, progress appears invisible, and the algorithm hasn’t gathered enough data to suggest your content to users.

A report by VidIQ on more than 5 million channels on the site showed that creators who uploaded 12 or more videos every month received 53% more views and 66% more subscribers than those who uploaded 1 to 3 videos every month. Patience is genuinely the most underrated advantage on YouTube.

LinkedIn: Fastest Organic Growth if You Post Weekly

Consistency in posting on LinkedIn is rewarded more quantitatively than on almost any other site. According to LinkedIn's internal data, weekly posts on LinkedIn have 5.6 times more follower growth. Data from the 2025 benchmark report by Buffer showed LinkedIn was the top performer among all the major platforms, with an average engagement rate of 6.5%. This was increased to 8.01% by January 2025.

For individual profiles, longer content lifespan on LinkedIn can mean that a single piece of content can be visible in feeds for a week or longer, reducing the time needed to gain traction on the site.

What Actually Determines Your Timeline

On every platform, there are three factors that compress or extend the growth curve: content quality, posting consistency, and niche specificity.

Having a specific niche helps the algorithm understand what kind of content you're posting and who it's best suited for. Hopping on a niche’s polar trends is a great way of achieving this. Posting consistently tells the platform and the audience that you're an account worth paying attention to. And finally, the quality of the content decides if the people who do stumble upon you are actually interested in what you're offering.

Knowing what's popular in your niche is a compounding factor, and the sooner you start posting about popular content, the longer it will stay popular.
